Phoenix spacecraft lands on Mars

Posted by carlos Mon, 30 Jun 2008 16:25:00 GMT

Nasa’s tripod-like spacecraft landed on the bizarre baren waste-land also known as Mars a couple of weeks ago. Microbes such as the Chryseobacterium greenlandensis have been found alive on Earth (mind you) in ice, but dormant after a very long 120,000 years. When the Phoenix landed on Mars it took a few samples of the ground and found that Mars had an ice layer beneath the surface. Maybe it is posible that as there is ice on the planet, microbes will be found.

Extreme life forms, like these colonies of Chryseobacterium greenlandensis, may be living near the north pole of Mars. If you want to see the phoenix landing click on the picture of it.

Stephen Hawking

Posted by carlos Sun, 09 Mar 2008 12:51:00 GMT

A couple of months ago , I went to see stephen hawking at cheltenham literature festival. It was really cool and I got to ask him a question:

“what is at the end of the universe, if there is an end of the universe”

his answer was:

“I believe there is no end of the universe because it is always expanding so it will keep on getting darker and colder”

this is what he looks like:

Big crunch theory

However some people believe it will stop expanding and start contracting, right down to a point.

Black holes

Here is a picture of a black hole which I drew:

Black holes are when a star is so heavy it collapses in on itself and it becomes so dense and so strong in its gravitational pull, not even light can escape.

NASA-astronomy picture of the day

Posted by carlos Tue, 19 Feb 2008 10:36:00 GMT

NASA’s astronomy picture of the day is a great way to explore the cosmos!

Here are 3 pictures which I think you should look at:

Sunspot in the Old Solar Cycle

Here is a picture of the sun. As you can see there are 2 sunspots. Sun spots are places on the sun where it is much cooler, so they appear dark.

Young Stars in the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud

Here is a picture of some baby stars in a nebula. As you can see one side of the nebula is bright, and the other is dark. This is because of the 2 gases. A nebula is what is left behind of a star that has died.

M1: The Crab Nebula from Hubble

Here is another nebula that was viewed by the hubble space telecope, the strongest telescope today.
